It’s undeniable that the terroir of a vineyard imparts a wine’s unique characteristics, and the Similkameen Valley is no exception. Its distinctive blend of minerality and arid climate creates the ideal conditions for producing exceptional wines.
However, terroir encompasses more than just the physical environment—it also includes the people who play a vital role in the winemaking process. At Seven Stones Estate Winery, we take immense pride in everyone involved, from those who meticulously pick the grapes to those who craft and market our wines. They love what they do and it shows in the quality of our wines.
The story of
The winery and vineyard property was purchased in 1999 when it was a hayfield and part of the ranch belonging to the neighbour below. The vines were planted in 2000 and the winery’s first vintage was 2003.
The man-made caves were built in 2016 to create the perfect aging environment for the wines. In the arid climate of the Similkameen Valley, an above-ground wine cellar would occupy a large footprint and require high energy consumption to keep the barrels in a cool, humid environment. However, by going 7 feet underground, the natural cooling power of Mother Nature is harnessed. The temperature remains around 10.5 degrees, mostly unaffected by external weather conditions.

Our official greeter
Everyone adores Benny, the Australian Labradoodle, and Benny adores everyone in return. When you arrive, he’ll joyfully come bouncing up to greet you.
Benny is also very fond of other dogs, but we recommend keeping your dog leashed during your visit. Benny the rascal, might tempt your dog to join him in chasing marmots or other mischievous adventures!
Our SECOND official greeter
Meet the newest member of the Seven Stones winery family: Baloo! This laid-back pup belongs to our wine ambassador, Jacquie. Unlike our energetic Benny, who still thinks he’s a puppy, Baloo is the picture of calm. True to his namesake from *The Jungle Book*, Baloo is a sweet, loving, and easygoing dog who adores everyone—especially kids. Just don’t be surprised if he stays in his cozy spot, as greeting visitors might cut into his precious nap time. We’re so happy to have you, Baloo!

Remembering Our Founder
George Hanson was a well-loved member of the Similkameen community, having made an impact in the BC wine industry with his high-quality red wines and vibrant personality. Making wine was his greatest passion and it showed in the quality of his product. He took great pride in his wines and making blends is where his creativity shined. George was an interesting character who loved to interact with the winery’s patrons during their visits. He particularly loved hosting epic winemaker’s dinners in the caves throughout the summer. These popular events would include great food, wine and George’s stories of his experiences growing and making wine. He would also treat all the guests to a tour of the wine cellar where he’d proudly share the details of how the caves were built. George was often heard saying, “I feel very fortunate to be living my dream where work seems somewhat like play.” Sadly, George died from a sudden heart attack on the evening of Sunday, February 7th, 2021 at the age of 63. |
